Historical Background and rationale International Influences and National Concerns Following the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm in June 1972, global attention turned to environmental degradation and pollution. India, being an active participant in the conference, recognised the urgency to address environmental issues, particularly air pollution.
